Stop chasing the algorithm

Platforms evolve and algorithms change, but building a recognizable brand identity is far more valuable than chasing every passing trend.

In the creator economy, there is a constant temptation: to tailor every decision to what seems to be working today.

A certain type of video starts gaining traction and everyone rushes to copy it. A platform updates its algorithm and, suddenly, new unwritten rules emerge about what to post, when to post it, how long a piece of content should be, or what tone the system supposedly "rewards."

The catch is that constantly chasing the algorithm can end up pulling you away from something much more important: your own unique identity.

The algorithm changes. Your brand should evolve, not fade away

Digital platforms are designed to change.

Instagram doesn't work the same way today as it did five years ago. TikTok has modified how it distributes content countless times. X, YouTube, creator platforms, and streaming services continuously adjust their priorities, formats, and discovery features.

What drives reach today might stop working tomorrow.

That’s why building a career solely around what a platform wants at any given moment is a fragile strategy.

A recognizable identity, on the other hand, stays with you from one platform to the next.

Your visual style, the way you communicate, your connection with your audience, your boundaries, your personality, and the vibe you deliver form a brand that is much harder to replace than any fleeting trend.

Audiences don't just follow platforms. They follow people

Over the years, we've seen social networks, content formats, and digital communities come and go.

Audiences migrate.

The creators who survive those shifts usually have one thing in common: people know exactly who they are.

A follower might discover you on Instagram and later connect with you on another platform. A client might meet you through a live stream and then follow your journey for years. A community will move with you as technology changes.

That happens when the relationship is built around the creator, not just the channel where they were first discovered.

The platform is simply the place where you meet.

Your brand is the reason they choose to stay.

Having an identity also means knowing what not to do

Not every trend needs to become part of your strategy.

You don't need to use every viral audio.

You don't need to be on every new social network.

You don't need to reinvent your content every time someone claims to have cracked "the secret of the algorithm."

A professional career requires observing trends, understanding them, and deciding which ones make sense for you.

The power lies in that: deciding.

Adapting is smart.

Losing your identity trying to constantly please a platform is not.

The best creators build recognition

Think of any creator whose career has spanned several years.

You can probably recognize their style before you even read their name.

It could be a specific aesthetic, a signature way of speaking, a unique photography style, a certain type of humor, an attitude, or a very distinct experience they deliver to their audience.

That is recognition.

And recognition is incredibly valuable because it reduces your dependence on any single platform.

When people recognize your work, your career begins to thrive beyond the algorithm.

The algorithm should work for you, not direct you

Of course, understanding how platforms work is still important.

Data is useful.

Reach matters.

Metrics can show you what content connects best with your audience.

But those tools should guide your strategy, not replace it.

The goal shouldn't be to ask yourself every day:

“What does the algorithm want?”

Perhaps the more powerful question is:

“What do I want people to recognize when they find me?”

Because algorithms will always change.

A beautifully crafted identity can last for years.
